NFC News Krist Novoselic involved with local Battle of the Bands contest |
Political activist and former bassist of seminal rock band Nirvana, Krist Novoselic recognizes the importance of being an active participant in one's local community. In that spirit, this year the well-known musician and Wahkiakum County resident is spearheading the musical element for the area's County Fair -- a heated competition among local artists- the 2006 Wahkiakum County Fair Battle of the Bands, taking place at the fair on Friday, August 18th at 7pm. "I believe that our communities are stronger when people work together and the fair is an example of that- people coming together to celebrate what is local. The Battle of the Bands is such an important element this year as it encourages participation in music - which is such a positive activity- especially for young people living in rural areas where less opportunity exists," says Novoselic of his involvement in this year's Battle of the Bands. Local talent will submit their three-song demos and entry forms by Friday, August 11th at Thiels Music locations, with the chance to perform for a panel of experts in the field including legendary producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Blue Cheer) and music journalist / author Gillian Gaar who, among writing for national publications such as Spin and Rolling Stone, also wrote the book She’s A Rebel- The History of Women in Rock n’ Roll. The judges will determine the finalists who will perform in the Battle of the Bands, as well as the ultimate winner. The winning band will be presented with the opportunity to play a show at Seattle's premier all ages music venue, the Vera Project as well as an Epiphone guitar and bass provided by Gibson. 2006 Wahkiakum County Fair Battle of the Bands Info: Entry Info: To enter, submit a three song demo at Thiels Music 1432 Commerce Ave in Longview (360-577-8138) or in Astoria 1375 Commercial St. (503-325-5981).
