NFC News Nirvana in the new U2 video |
From Adam: "Just saw the music video to U2's new song Windows in the Skies. The video is basically lots and lots of famous music artists playing and singing along with some bad lipsync to U2's new song! They didn't attempt any lipsyncs with Kurt - but nonetheless Nirvana feature approximately 3 times in the video." The clips are from various Nirvana concerts. You can view the U2 video below. |

NFC News 2006 in review | |
Again, we got an official release this time in the form of the first stand-alone Nirvana DVD release. Although a very disappointing release, it was certainly better than nothing and hopefully an omen of things to come. Also this year, Courtney Love sold a 25% stake in the Nirvana catalog, the consequences of which has yet to be seen. Finally, I got to meet Krist Novoselic which was a very cool experience all on its own. A full runthrough: January: Nirvana's 1992 Reading Festival concert is broadcast on British radio. Frances Bean is interviewed for the magazine i-D. February: The 7" Kurt Cobain action figure is presented at a toy fair in New York. NFC interviews AJ Schnack, director of a new Kurt Cobain documentary. March: Rolling Stone reports that Courtney Love has sold 25% of the Nirvana publishing rights to Larry Mestel of Primary Wave Music Publishing. April: A 1960s guitar used by Kurt Cobain fetches $118,000 in an online auction. May: Rolling Stone #1000 is published, which includes a small Kurt Cobain image on the cover. June/July: The NFC Compilation best of album is put online. August: Krist gets involved with local Battle of the Bands contest. September: The AJ Schnack documentary opens at the Toronto International Film Festival. Two new Nirvana books come out: Everett True's massive 600-page Nirvana biography and Gillian Gaar's book about the In Utero album. New Courtney Love documentary airs in the UK. In the wake of the 15th anniversary of the 'Nevermind' album, a number of magazine articles and features are published. October: Courtney Love's "Dirty Blonde" book is published. NFC posts a review of new Nirvana book by Jeff Burlingame. It is announced by Forbes that Kurt Cobain is the top-earning celebrity (mostly because of Courtney selling a stake in the publishing rights). November: Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! DVD is released. Krist Novoselic joins punk legends Flipper for a short US/Europe tour with The Melvins. December: Krist writes a little message for the NFC. Also in 2006: The Foo Fighters toured the world (again), were up for five Grammy Awards and frontman Dave Grohl got his first baby. Also, the Foo's went on a short tour of acoustic shows with former Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear and played "Marigold" which was also released on CD and DVD in November. Thanks to everyone who visited in 2006. I hope to see you again in '07

NFC News Guitar Hero II | |
The game basically lets you play along to classic rock anthems, using a small plastic guitar with five buttons that you need to hit in order to match the guitarist on screen. Some of the songs you can play include classics by Mötley Crüe, Van Halen, Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, Black Sabbath, Guns N' Roses and of course Nirvana. The game came out in the UK last month and should be available worldwide now. In other news, the same issue of Kerrang! gave the "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!" DVD a 4 out of 5 rating, calling it "the most truthful document of a goofy, enthused rock band becoming bemused/exasperated by the circus that swiftly surrounded them."

NFC News A message from Krist ...
The band played an amazing set, featuring classics such as "Sex Bomb", "Way of the World" and "Sacrifice" - the latter featuring Dale Crover and Buzz Osbourne of The Melvins as well as Coady Williams of Big Business (three drummers on stage! - albeit Dale Crover was only playing the cymbals). Needless to say, it was amazing to see Krist, Dale and Buzz play together on stage, not to mention original members of Flipper; Bruce Loose, Ted Falconi & Steve DePace. Click here to watch a video of Sacrifice from a soundcheck (2 minute clip). After the show, I was lucky enough to meet the bands and talk with everyone for a short while, including Krist Novoselic. He was kind enough to write a little greeting for the NFC visitors (see picture in the upper right corner). Thanks to Flipper, The Melvins, Big Business and everyone else for a great show and a great experience!

NFC News Nirvana on RuPaul show |
Back in 1993, RuPaul hosted a Christmas special where Nirvana were among her guests. On sites such as YouTube, only a short clip from this special can be found. Now, a longer clip is online. You can watch it here (in order to play it, you may have to right-click on the "Clip service" link and then save the file to your harddrive before you play it). Thanks to Jeff for the tip!

NFC News Shocking Blue singer dies |
Mariska Veres, better known as the lead singer of the legendary band Shocking Blue has died in Den Haag (Holland) at the age of 59, due to cancer, on December 2, 2006. In the sixties band Shocking Blue earned worldwide fame with their hit, 'Venus'. In 1974 the band fell apart, however the band played together on reunions. Nirvana fans will remember Shocking Blue the best from the song 'Love Buzz' which was covered by Nirvana and became their first single. Thanks to John and others for the news. |
