NFC News Smells Like ... Ukulele?
On some TV show, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain took it upon themselves to perform a rather .. alternative cover of Nirvana's legendary song Smells Like Teen Spirit live.

I guarantee this is pretty different from any other cover of the song you may have heard. The tuxedo-clad gentlemen even headbang along to the song. Well, the long-haired one does, at least. Is it wrong that I enjoyed it? View the funny video here (requires Flash).

NFC News The Seattle Chainsaw Massacre
Before he became the charming frontman of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain apparently "ushered a bunch of people into the dungeon underneath a castle and let them all suffocate to death." In a past life, that is.

He also planned on having another child, Thomas. All this is according to psychic Victoria Bullis' column in the new issue of the men's magazine Stuff. In her Beyond the Grave column she states that "Kurt Cobain was a troubled and a depressed soul since many previous lifetimes. The depression was set in Cobain when he murdered people in the 16th century." Despite his troubled past, Cobain will supposedly return soon: "He plans to be back in 15 years, and he'll be a child prodigy" Good times. Read more here and here.

In related "news", a 2005 book called Witnesses To The Unsolved by Edward Olshaker details 'spirit communication' with Kurt Cobain. Apparently, prominent psychics and mediums share their insights on the deaths of Vince Foster, Martin Luther King Jr. and our very own Mr. Cobain. One reviewer raves: "this book is the real deal and has the most thorough investigation into Kurt Cobain's death that is humanly possible."

NFC News Rolling Stone #1000 published
Issue #1000 of the legendary magazine Rolling Stone was published this week. The cover features a picture of Kurt Cobain as an angel, along with hundreds other pics of recent history's biggest entertainers. Editor and Publisher Jann Wenner explains the cover:

"To mark 1,000 issues, we wanted to create a cover both extraordinary and celebratory. In searching for ideas, we discovered that technology for 3-D printing had come a long way and had never been used for a magazine cover as ambitious and mass-market as this one. It took two months to manufacture, and more than 2 million were made. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which came out in 1967, the same year as Rolling Stone, was an album that changed our world forever. The 3-D idea, and a homage to the Beatles, seemed just right."

NFC News Daniel Johnston documentary
Janet sent in this tidbit: "Jeff Feuerzeig's new documentary THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON, a 110 minute feature film, includes a section on Kurt, his Daniel Johnson t-shirt, footage of a 'Lithium' performance, and voice-overs attributing Johnston's emergence as a well-known musician to Kurt's sponsorship.

Sonic Youth plays a large part in the story as well, as do other artists--notably Gibby Haynes, at whose concert Johnston is said to have dropped a dose of acid that seems to have set off his first major breakdown-- and record industry folks, including Danny Goldberg [former Nirvana manager].

As everyone knows, Johnston was a favorite of Kurt's, although during most of Nirvana's career Johnston was very ill and institutionalized, so that the film asserts that he probably didn't even know who Nirvana was at the time. The documentary is a fascinating glimpse of Johnston, his music, and the Austin Texas 80s scene."

NFC News "Krist and Dave have nothing to do with Nirvana's publishing rights"
In a new interview with Courtney Love, she comments on selling 25% of Nirvana's publishing rights. Essentially she was broke and needed some extra cash for "groceries". She also insists that decisions concerning use of the Nirvana catalogue still remain with her (I'm sure the guy who paid a bazillion dollars for a stake is thrilled).

" 'Basically I needed the money. Frances [Bean] was really, really confused about why her dad's on every radio station in the world and why her mom sells a few records herself, and why we didn't have enough money, really, for groceries.'

'It's very hard to be very, very famous and be that broke. So I sold off a little bit of what I've got and kept the majority of it.'

'He [Larry Mestel] doesn't get to decide anything, it's not like all of a sudden there's going to be some big shift in like, y'know, c**p adverts or something.'

Love also insists the remaining Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have no claim on the publishing rights themselves.

She adds, 'They don't have anything to do with it... Krist and Dave didn't write the songs, they didn't inherit anything, that's the way it goes. Tough shit. What do you want me to say?' "

NFC News Dave Grohl and Courtney Love peace deal?
According to news reports, Courtney Love and Dave Grohl are having lunch soon to bury the hatchet. Love said "I think Dave and I are getting close to burying the hatchet. We have a lunch scheduled so that'll be nice, but, erm, businesswise we don't have anything to do with each other." Thanks to the Irish Examiner.

Speaking of Courtney Love, apparently her next album will be "In Utero" styled. "[Love] is planning to emulate the recording of her late husband's last album by going working on some lo-fi songs with Moby. She explains to The Sun, 'I just sort of safe around Moby, I can't explain it, but we've been hanging out lots.

'What we're going to do is three days of rehearsals and four days of recording. It will be 'In Utero' style - lo-fi, no Pro Tools, all old gear.' "

NFC News Red Hot Chili Peppers as Nirvana
In the new video by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dani California (the first single off their new album), they re-create a number of important scenes from music history. This includes Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, The Sex Pistols and Nirvana. Their "Nirvana moment" comes in the form of a re-creation of a scene from Nirvana's Unplugged performance. Watch the video here.

In an interview about the video, the band explains: "We're paying homage to these eras," said singer Anthony Kiedis. "We appreciate and love all these eras. It's very interesting because for a band like us, if we've been around long enough and we've lived through a lot of these eras at least the ones from the 80s on, and though we've always been conscious of our environment and aware of what's going on around us but we've never been aligned specifically within the era of any group and it's fun to pay homage to something."
