Review by: Eryn Mulloy (In Utero Goddess) I went to see Eyes Adrift on April 26 [2002]. It was a Friday and they were playing at the Magic Stick, which is located right in Detroit. I was so hyped when I found out that their short US tour included my town. I went and got tickets the very day they came out. As a huge Nirvana fan myself, I had to go! I found out from NFC, so I thought I would only be thoughtful enough to share my pictures & experience with everyone. The doors were scheduled to open at 8, so we got there then, but we had to wait in line till about 9. Everything was an hour behind that night. We got there and there were already about 15 people in line. We waited in line for about an hour. As it passed, the line grew. I saw some 16-year old kid, wearing a Nirvana shirt, and it just seemed so lame to do that. I cannot explain it, but I think that was just like totally not fit for this evening. I later found a few other wearing their Nirvana shirts too. I was there definitely for Krist, if not him, then Curt from The Meat Puppets. I saw the Meat Puppets before a few years ago, so I knew this had to be a great show anyway. The line started to move, I was pushing everyone up there. They checked ID's, cause this was an 18 and over show. Then they finally let us in! I passed the 1st door into the building and I saw a poster for the show. It has a blue monkey on it -- nothing too fancy. I thought to myself I would grab it at the end of the show. I should have grabbed it then. We handed them our ticket, and told us to enjoy the show! I was in, no search or anything! I ran right to the stage, up to the tallest microphone, knowing it would be Krists. It was so odd, cause when I got in, there was only one spot left in front of the stage. The spot for me it seemed! After another hour waiting for the opening band Guardian Alien, who were also from Seattle. They played a pretty good hour-long set. Their songs were like trying too hard to be catchy though. Singing about "meter-maids" and the number five. I was not inspired nor impressed, but they seemed like nice guys. They had an electric banjo for some songs, and an accordian for others, so their creative inutility was appreciated. Then another 45 minutes passed, waiting in between sets, for Eyes Adrift. I was basically fighting for my spot! Kids came up pushing me and I screamed and pushed them back. I knew I was where everyone else wanted to be :) The lights went down and I notice the Sweet 75 bass amp case on the stage. I knew that was Krist's corner and that I was right in front of it. Finally I saw shuffles and movement coming out behind the curtain. I take a picture with my camera hoping it would catch something. I got what I wanted. It was a picture of Krist. He was drinking out of a Styrofoam cup, walking out to the stage. He picked up his bass, as casual as if he was playing in a basement. He did the usual bass warm-ups -- that sound like the beginning of 'Dive'. Curt's loud guitar blaired into the 1st song. I love it! The energy from all three members and the music. I cannot explain the music ... it has all the best elements of the Meat Puppets solo playing, Nirvana's simple and catchy bass riffs and Sublime's pop-rocket drum beats. It was like they went swimming in the gene pool and took out all the best stuff! The 1st song sound kind of 'metal'. Krist was not shy at all; I mean could you imagine. If I were him I would feel some odd expectation that I had to be good, and the only reason these kids are here is cause of someone I knew. Same with all of the bandmates. Krist did his usual bounce and bending a sort of backward stand throughout each song. Around the second song he noticed me - he actually looked at me! I was smiling, and he just nodded, like he knew I was just one of the 'Nirvana Kids' or something. He did notice my 'Babes In Toyland' shirt though. I caught him looking at it. It was so weird when he looked at me, I just wanted to tell him everything about how I love Nirvana, and how they saved me, but I did not want to sound or seem like that. But I think he could see it in my eyes, and any other kids' eyes; the hope, questions and love they had for him and Nirvana. Krist did sing a few songs too, and sounded really good! As we know, Krist does not have the golden voice, but I was shocked to hear it sound so well! He talked to us too, he was fearless, and full of life, and mentioned he was glad to be here with us. One of Curt's first sentences were 'Welcome to Santa's Chocolate land'. Referring to all the black people in Detroit. They talked about '7 flavor and layer splurges' over and over. I think Krist didn't like all the pictures I was taking, but I was not like snapping photos left to right in his face. When he came up close, I did not take a picture, or when he was looking into the audience. I did not want him not to come close cause some crazy girl was taking all these pictures. He was very 'in' with the audience and let us touch his bass and got so close I would have been hit in the head by the end of his bass if I did not duck! It was funny to see Curt's Big Muff pedal, one of my personal favorite pedals. Their setlist was on a US priority mail envelope. The roadies took it off the stage during the last song, so no one would take it. The crowd was filled with a lot of drunks, which could also make the mood turn for the worse, on top of the Nirvana shirted kids. The night ended with another loud song. Their music is very, very loud. Vocals are low but fits perfect in with the songs, and sloppy. Curt puts his twist of odd noises and plays his guitar with quarters, and punches it time and again. A great show. They were totally into it, and loved to actually play, and you could tell they were doing this for fun, rather than money. I thought the whole time I was here; 'what was everyone's reason for being there?'. It seemed such an odd show, and everyone would just have some reason to be there. So many people did not fit like they listened to the Meat Puppets or anything, or may not even know who the band was they were going to see tonight. They left the stage abruptly and never came back. Krist gave that well known wave goodbye. Sat his bass down, and walked away from another moment where music saved me. I waited for an hour 'till I noticed that the opening band was leaving through the back door. So I left too. The flyer was gone on the door. My hearing was blurred. I was looking for souvenirs. I remember thinking, once Krist put that bass down, will I ever see anything this close to my dreams again? I was so lucky to see this show. I will never forget it and I fell in love with music all over again that night.
