NFC News Jared Leto performs as Kurt Cobain
Actor and musician Jared Leto has released an already controversial video where he performs as Kurt Cobain - donning the right outfits and all, closely resembling how the late singer looked at the Unplugged show. Leto performs a quite impressive acoustic cover of Nirvana's Pennyroyal Tea and Rape Me. Watch here:

From Jared Leto: "I heard today (April 5) was the day Kurt passed away 17 years ago. Can't believe it's been that long. So grateful for his contribution and inspiration. Not sure I'd be doing this if it weren't for him. He gave us all permission to create no matter what our skill set and reminded me that dreams are possible. Thanks for that. This made me recall a short piece of film I shot when I heard they were making a film celebrating his life. I made it to explore the character and explore creative possibilities. I never sent it to the studio or to anyone but thought I'd share it now." Video courtesy of YouTube.

NFC News "Taking Punk to the Masses" book now available
Just published in connection with the upcoming exhibit at the EMP in Seattle, Taking Punk to the Masses - a companion book that documents the explosion of Grunge.

Featuring over 100 key artifacts from EMP’s collection, Taking Punk to the Masses illustrates the evolution of punk rock from underground subculture to mainstream embrace. These artifacts are put into context by the stories of those that lived it: Mudhoney’s Mark Arm, Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, Hüsker Dü’s Grant Hart, Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson, X’s Exene Cervenka, Sub Pop founders Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman, Black Flag’s Henry Rollins, Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan, Blondie’s Chris Stein, Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic, Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis, Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil, and nearly 100 others.

The book also includes a DVD which features interviews with musicians (including Krist Novoselic), producers, club owners and many others from the grunge years.

For a PDF excerpt from the book, a DVD trailer, slideshow and ordering information, check out Fantagraphics books. Here you can find additional information about the book.

NFC News Statue unveiled in Aberdeen
As mentioned in a previous story, a new statue to commemorate Kurt Cobain has been erected in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. The statue was unveiled to the public earlier this week.

Designed by Lora and Kim Malakoff, the statue is a large left-handed guitar, based on the look of the Fender Jag-Stang that Cobain designed.

For more information on the small ceremony and other Nirvana-related locations in the area, check out this article from the Examiner about the event, courtesy of Gillian G. Gaar.
