NFC News Buy Kurt Cobain's watch...! |
"Kurt Cobain's Personally Owned, Stage and Screen-Worn Wrist Watch. It was the only watch he wore, according to good friend and legendary Babes in Toyland singer Kat Bjelland. Kurt Cobain's wrist watch, like most pieces in his wardrobe, was staple. Worn until his last days, the watch was everywhere." The watch is currently part of an online auction, expected to fetch past $35,000 ... Thanks to Mark for the tip. |

NFC News Foo Fighters My Hero used without permission for Republican campaign
And as the Foo Fighters made clear in the statement, Republican senator John McCain isn't, er, their hero. "It's frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property," they growled. "This isn't the first time the McCain campaign has used a song without making any attempt to get approval or permission from the artist." The band said that permission to use the song was not sought from them, their management, their label or their publisher. "The saddest thing about this is that My Hero was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential," the statement reads, although many fans have speculated that the song, written by Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, refers to his admiration for former Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain. More about the scandal here and here.

NFC News Goldberg talks about Cobain in new interview
I know one thing for sure: That he wanted to be successful, that he insisted on it. He came to L.A., no one made him. Plenty of artists from that punk scene didn't come searching managers out, didn't decide to go on major labels. The fact that he wanted success didn't mean that he liked all the things he got when it happened. He loved the integrity of the punk culture and never wanted to betray it, and it pained him when he thought he was betraying it, Goldberg told Seattle Times music critic Patrick MacDonald. The former Nirvana manager also talks fondly about Dave Grohl, although he admits he didn't know him too well, and praises Krist Novoselic's political activism. Krist is so serious about his political activism. So disciplined. I am so impressed with him. He's like a policy wonk. He's highly sophisticated. Not the image of the big bass player who threw the bass into the air and it hit him on the head. He is so serious. I admire him a lot. Read the full article here.

NFC News Cobain's ashes not stolen, says Courtney Love rep
Love's publicist, Alan Nierob revealed that Cobain's remains "were never taken" and said the story had been "erroneously reported". Nierob responded after a German artist claimed she would smoke Cobain's ashes as part of an exhibition at Berlin's Wagner + Partner gallery later this month. A statement for the exhibition said Natascha Stellmach had "acquired" Cobain's ashes by a "kind of magic" and would smoke them in order to free Cobain "into the ether from the media circus". NFC News New book by Charles Peterson
Bigger and badder than ever, breakdancing has grown since its beginnings in the early eighties to become a global youth phenomenon today. Yet it remains a highly individualized practice. All one needs to get down are some beats and a smooth floor (and, of course, scads of strength, style, and brio). With Cypher, Peterson takes a fresh look at this phenomenon with his own brand of fine-art documentation: part Larry Fink, part Barbara Morgan, with a heaping dose of the spirit that defined his previous powerHouse monograph, Touch Me I'm Sick. He focuses not only on some of the most radical performances by today's most talented breakers, but also on the fans, the sidelines, and the camaraderie of the crews in order to put you inside the world of the b-boy. Taken primarily with cumbersome medium-format cameras, the photographs have the depth and resolution normally associated with high-end fashion and portrait photography - even when the subjects are caught spontaneously in mid-air! Despite the awkwardness of the method, the photos still have all the buzz and excitement found in Peterson's iconic images of the grunge movement, with an added twist of unexpected elegance. Cypher was shot over a period of six years, primarily in Peterson's hometown of Seattle, as well as at major events over the last few years in Los Angeles, New York City, and Portland, Oregon." The book is available now. More info here. Charles Peterson did numerous photo sessions with Nirvana and often photographed the band live, becoming their official photographer. His work was also used in the recent documentary, About A Son.
