| NFC News Nirvana music used in upcoming Rock Band 2 game | |
 The second installment of the popular Rock Band games by Harmonix will include the Nirvana track Drain You. The game also features tracks by bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, The Who, Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters & a brand new song by Guns N' Roses - among others. The game allows players to simulate playing music in a rock band on one of four instruments: lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, and vocals, by themselves or with other players locally or online. Rock Band players use peripherals modeled after musical instruments to simulate the performance of rock music. Players must play these instruments in time with musical "notes" as they scroll towards them on the screen. Rock Band offers single-player and multiplayer gameplay for lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, and vocals, allowing for any combination of parts to play as a band. The game will be released in September 2008 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and Wii game consoles. Nirvana music was also used in the first Rock Band game. | NFC News Possible Cobain-reference on new Metallica album | |
In an interview for Norway's VG, prior to Metallica's performance in Bergen, Norway last night, frontman James Hetfield comments on the upcoming Metallica album, Death Magnetic. In the interview, Hetfield discusses the theme of the new album: "It started out, kinda as a tribute to people who have fallen in our business, like Layne Staley [Alice in Chains] and a lot of the people who have died, basically. Rock 'n' roll martyrs of sorts." Hetfield also comments on how some people are drawn to death - hence the title. Considering the theme of the album, a sort of tribute to fallen heroes in music, there's bound to be a nod to Cobain as well. Watch the interview here. | NFC News Bleach sales, Nirvana as a rite of passage |
| In a recent Q&A for the Guardian, Sub Pop's Jonathan Poneman explains why Nirvana's Bleach may remain the label's greatest seller, despite more recent successful releases by the Shins or Iron & Wine. "I still speak to my friends whose kids are becoming teenagers, and they discover Nirvana as a sort of rite of passage. Some cultures have Bar Mitzvah. We have Nirvana." More here. | NFC News MTV tours Sub Pop offices, takes glimpse of Nirvana platinum record | |
To honor Sub Pop's 20th anniversary, MTV sent a journalist to visit the influential label's offices in Seattle, Washington. The tour was given by none other than Sub Pop Executive Vice President Megan Jasper (photo courtesy of MTV), who also came up with a list of her 20 favorite (and most important) Sub Pop records, that couldn't have left out Nirvana's debut LP, Bleach. See a video of the tour here, to take a peek at the Nirvana platinum record proudly exhibited...in the men's room! The SP20 Festival is taking place this weekend in Seattle - the city is posting Sub Pop's iconic black-and-white flag atop the Space Needle. More info on the showcase, including an appearance by Cobain favorites The Vaselines and a much-anticipated reunion of proto-grunge band Green River, here. The label will also re-launch, for a period of one year only, the Sub Pop Singles Club that, some 20 years ago, gave us the most coveted Nirvana collectible: the Love Buzz 7".
