NFC News Nirvana music used in upcoming Rock Band 2 game
The second installment of the popular Rock Band games by Harmonix will include the Nirvana track Drain You.

The game also features tracks by bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, The Who, Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters & a brand new song by Guns N' Roses - among others.

The game allows players to simulate playing music in a rock band on one of four instruments: lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, and vocals, by themselves or with other players locally or online. Rock Band players use peripherals modeled after musical instruments to simulate the performance of rock music. Players must play these instruments in time with musical "notes" as they scroll towards them on the screen. Rock Band offers single-player and multiplayer gameplay for lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, and vocals, allowing for any combination of parts to play as a band.

The game will be released in September 2008 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and Wii game consoles.

Nirvana music was also used in the first Rock Band game. Check out our new section for more info on that, and other use of Nirvana's music in video games, movies, tv shows and more.

NFC News More on the Sub Pop anniversary + Mojo cover story
A couple of pieces from Blurt online, including a story about the 'grunge lexicon' and more Sub Pop coverage. Check it out here. Text-based version of all 3 stories here.

In related news - the August 2008 issue of Mojo has a cover story about the Sub Pop anniversary, with an old b&w concert snap of Kurt Cobain gracing the cover. Inside, there's an article on the rise of Nirvana and their "grunge explosion"!

"NIRVANA AND SUB POP: Two decades on from the grunge explosion that turned an independent Seattle record label into a globally revered name, MOJO's Keith Cameron reunites the sonic pioneers, key players and riotous music for an exclusive journey through Sub Pop’s unmatched history. PLUS! Mudhoney speak! AND! The 20 best Sub Pop records!"

The magazine comes with a free CD - SUB POP 300! "MOJO celebrates 20 years of America's most iconic label with 15 killer tracks from the likes of Mudhoney, Green River, Tad, The Shins, No Age and many, many more."

Finally, the magazine includes a story (and great picture) from the Foo Fighters performance at Wembley where they were joined by the members of Led Zeppelin for the encore at one of the shows. Check out the online webcast of the shows here.

NFC News Possible Cobain-reference on new Metallica album
In an interview for Norway's VG, prior to Metallica's performance in Bergen, Norway last night, frontman James Hetfield comments on the upcoming Metallica album, Death Magnetic. In the interview, Hetfield discusses the theme of the new album: "It started out, kinda as a tribute to people who have fallen in our business, like Layne Staley [Alice in Chains] and a lot of the people who have died, basically. Rock 'n' roll martyrs of sorts."

Hetfield also comments on how some people are drawn to death - hence the title. Considering the theme of the album, a sort of tribute to fallen heroes in music, there's bound to be a nod to Cobain as well.

Watch the interview here.

The new Metallica album Death Magnetic comes out in September.
