NFC News New Foo Fighters song inspired by Cobain and Courtney Love |
From Rolling Stone: "Now Grohl has spoken to the Guardian about Let it Die, a new Foo Fighters song off the band’s forthcoming Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (out September 25) that seems to address the former Nirvana drummer’s feelings about Cobain’s relationship with Love. The song contains the lyrics: 'A simple man and his blushing bride / Intravenous, intertwined.' '[It’s] a song that’s written about feeling helpless to someone else’s demise,' he said. 'I’ve seen people lose it all to drugs and heartbreak and death. It’s happened more than once in my life, but the one that’s most noted is Kurt. And there are a lot of people that I’ve been angry with in my life, but the one that’s most noted is Courtney. So it’s pretty obvious to me that those correlations are gonna pop up every now and again,' he explained, laughing. 'I still remain a little secretive about it all.' " Read the full story here, courtesy of Rolling Stone. Thanks to Sam for the link. The new Foo Fighters album will be released throughout most of the world tomorrow, and hits the US and Canada on Tuesday. |

NFC News First memorial concert a success |
About 600 fans showed up for the first benefit concert in the memory of Kurt Cobain, held at the 7th Street Theatre in Hoquiam, WA last week. "About an hour before the concert in Hoquiam was set to begin, everything was quiet under the Young Street Bridge in Aberdeen, where the grunge rock icon is said to have hung out as a young man, seemingly with no place else to go. For more then a decade now, fans have come to the Harbor to try to come to grips with Cobain’s death in 1994 and figure out just what made him click. On Saturday night, they finally had a place to go and feel welcome, courtesy of the Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee. The non-profit group made up of Cobain fans and Kurt’s grandfather, Leland, is raising funds for a park and youth center in Kurt’s name." Read a full report of the event here, courtesy of the Aberdeen Daily World. Apparently a second concert is planned for next year. Read more about that here. Also check out the committee's MySpace page here. Finally, check out this story from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer for a review and photos of the event. |

NFC News Season premiere of Cold Case to feature 8 Nirvana songs
"LOS ANGELES — Eight original songs by Grammy Award-winning seminal grunge band Nirvana will be featured throughout the fifth season premiere of COLD CASE, Sunday, Sept. 23 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. The featured songs are: 'All Apologies,' 'Stay Away,' 'If You Must,' 'Lithium,' 'Drain You,' 'Heart Shaped Box,' 'Something in the Way' and 'Come as You Are.' 'We're thrilled to be featuring Nirvana songs exclusively throughout this chilling episode about two seemingly nihilistic male teens who may have been falsely accused and convicted of murdering three 10-year-old boys,' said COLD CASE Executive Producer Veena Sud, who wrote this episode. 'Nirvana's music not only evokes the era when this case's killings took place but brings a starkness and poetry to the story that deeply enhances it.' The episode, entitled 'Thrill Kill', takes place several weeks after the COLD CASE season four finale, when Lilly (Kathryn Morris) was shot and critically wounded. She has just returned to work and tries to convince her boss, Stillman (John Finn), and herself that she's emotionally ready to spearhead the re-opening of the disturbing 1994 case after new evidence suggests that the boys' real killer may still be at large. The episode was directed by Alex Zakrzewski. Past single-artist episodes of COLD CASE have showcased the music of Johnny Cash, John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, Tim McGraw, U2 and Bob Dylan. Kathryn Morris, Danny Pino, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Thom Barry and Tracie Thoms. It is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television in association with CBS Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, Meredith Stiehm and Veena Sud are the executive producers." Also see this story from the Chicago Tribune. Thanks to Jit for the link. NFC News Kurt Cobain mention in Maxim |
Kurt Cobain is mentioned in the Septmeber 2007 issue of Maxim. They have an article called "The Second Coming" featuring dead celebrities in clothes that they never would've worn when alive. Kurt is dressed in a tuxedo with a bowtie holding a glass of champagne, and Tupac Shakur is shown with a somewhat preppy look. Also featured are JFK Jr. dressed like a rapper, and Bob Marley in a metallic Italian suit, amongst others. Thanks to Jonathan for this story as well. |

NFC News Nirvana in new issue of Spin
There's a b&w pic taken by Charles Peterson of Kurt backstage talking to Kim Gordon. When asked about Kurt, Thurston said "His ascendancy was so quick -- all of a sudden everybody knew this person that we knew. And then all of a sudden it was over. He had a really deep soul. And even though he was just another one of the gang, everyone knew he had just something a little extra going on." And when asked about Kurt's friendship with Kim Gordon, he said "He respected her a lot. And he really adored her. I knew Kurt but it wasn't that intimate a relationship. I mean we spent a lot of time together when we were on tour and we kept connected, but I think his death was a lot more emotional for her. My thing with Kurt was a couple of goofy guys jumping around with each other, whereas they had something deeper." Then he talks about the dreaded phone call he had to make and let Kim know about Kurt's death. It's a really interesting interview, even aside from the mentions of Kurt. You can read the interview here. Thanks to Spin and also thanks to Jonathan for the tip.
